Project Overview
People of Parliament provides the first public-facing online database of members of the legislatures of Aotearoa New Zealand past and present. Our resource aggregates biographical data for every member of the New Zealand House of Representatives (1854 to the present day), Legislative Councils (1841 until 1951) and Provincial Councils (1853 until 1876) and presents it in a searchable online tool. A further table includes information on governors and governors-general of New Zealand.
Users can search for, filter and download the data on individuals using a range of variables including birthplace, parents' birthplace, iwi affiliation, heritage, ethnicity, gender, place of education, occupation, religion, and place of death.
In addition, our resource includes data visualisations and interpretive blog posts.
Note on language: The research team is conscious that our site is currently available only in English. We apologise for this. We hope we can secure funds and expertise to enable us to create a te reo Māori version of the site in the future.
